![]() ![]() If you’re anxious to get your hands on the new features that are ready right now, upgrading to macOS Monterey should be a smooth experience, especially now that version 12.2 is out. It’s unclear if it has been fixed in recent updates, but it’s always advisable to stay up to date if you’re experiencing issues. Apple has not made a statement about this problem and it doesn’t seem to be isolated to Monterey-macOS Big Sur users are experiencing the same problem. This is likely a memory allocation bug that will be fixed in an OS update. Over a short period of time, the amount of memory allocated adds up and takes up a huge chunk of RAM. Apple will support macOS Big Sur for a while and won’t stop releasing updates for many months.Īnother issue that is being reported is memory leaks, where an app or function doesn’t release the memory it was using in RAM. While it’s tempting to jump on the Monterey wave as soon as it comes, there’s really no rush. For more information on how to use the new features, check out our macOS Monterey Superguide. The highly anticipated Universal Control feature, which lets you use a single mouse to control two Macs or a Mac and an iPad, was delayed until spring 2022.īesides the new features, Monterey brings a lot of under-the-hood improvements and optimizations, including security updates and optimizations to make the operating system run more efficiently. Version 12.1 also includes the new Apple Music Voice Plan, a revamped Memories section in the Photos app, child safety features in Messages, and the new Digital Legacy feature for Apple ID. For example, a FaceTime group call can watch an Apple TV show or listen to Apple Music together. SharePlay is finally here-this FaceTime feature that allows users to share media. The 12.1 update that Apple released in December adds even more features. Apple's speed gains on the M-series chips over the Intel models have been so good that they still feel fantastic.Shortcuts made its debut on iOS and was an instant hit. Will a future M3 take another leap? Maybe you shouldn't worry. Apple's M2 was only a moderate increase in performance over the breakthrough advance of the M1 before it when it arrived last summer. One note: the 15 now has a year-old M2 processor. These are the easiest way to get a great larger-screened MacBook now, and they're worth it. If you've always wanted a bigger display but didn't want to pay more than $1000 for the privilege, your time is now.īut either way, these laptops are over $1,000 less than the 16-inch-screen MacBook Pro. ![]() ![]() If you've hesitated to consider buying a MacBook Air because its screens always seemed a bit too cramped, you now have another option. Now Apple sells that same computer but with a 15.3-inch display. I liked that laptop so much that I bought one for myself. I wish I had more to say about the new 15-inch MacBook Air, but really, the best compliment I can give it is that it's just as great as the 13-inch model I reviewed last summer. It should be particularly attractive to people who haven't recently upgraded. If you're shopping for a system that will mostly live on a desk at home or in the office, the 15-inch is a great choice.Īll in all, the 15-inch MacBook Air is one of the first laptops from Apple since the M-series transition to be priced aggressively, and represents a great option for people who want a daily use laptop. For a vast majority of users, the Air is a great device, and the 13-inch is plenty sufficient for most tasks – especially if you travel a lot. Ditto for those who are more serious about gaming. If this is your work machine, and you do a lot of resource-intensive tasks, get a Pro. My advice when buying a MacBook in 2023 is fairly simple. Good laptops make us better versions of ourselves. And it will help them do their work and check their emails and watch Netflix faster and better. It's everything you'd want from a MacBook Air. Not because this MacBook is ushering in a new era for humanity but because real, regular people - sitting on their couches, checking their emails, bookmarking their recipes, whatever it is we all do - are going to be happy with this device. I am glad to be on the laptop beat today. Check out our roundup of hands-on reviews below. ![]()
